Workshop CitiVerse Sandbox #3 Thursday 29 April
From concept to execution: Connecting BIM, CIM, open data, and real-world applications into a shared Nordic CitiVerse Sandbox.
This workshop is the third and continuing part of a broader Nordic (FinEstNorSwe) initiative to define and prototype a CitiVerse Sandbox — a shared environment where BIM and CIM can converge into a unified, scalable and interoperable system.
We are now expanding participation by inviting universities and vocational institutions working within previous Sandbox-related themes to deepen collaboration between academia, research, and implementation actors.
New Collaboration & Real-World Integration
Through recent dialogue with industry and academia, the workshop now integrates concrete contributions from Visuma, Nordic BIM Group, and upcoming contacts within SBUF.
Participants will gain access to open BIM models from the SBUF project “Öppna BIM-modeller fria att ladda ner för utbildning och forskning” (Open BIM models free to download for education and research), enabling real testing and educational use.
The session will include insights from real projects, including award-winning BIM workflows, and highlight practical challenges across the building lifecycle.
This creates a unique opportunity to connect education, real project data, and industry practices within the CitiVerse Sandbox.
Follow-up & Hackathon Preparation
A key sub-purpose of the April 29 workshop is to generate a structured foundation for an upcoming hackathon, co-organised with Immersive Sweden, DTSC Insamlingsstiftelse, Nationell hubb för digitala tvillingar, and the SEK arbetsgruppen Standarder och plattformar
The workshop will identify concrete use-cases, datasets, technical challenges, and interoperability needs that can be directly translated into hackathon tracks. This ensures continuity from strategic discussion to hands-on development, accelerating progress toward a shared Nordic CitiVerse ecosystem.

Context and Problem Framing
Across Europe, cities are rapidly developing digital twins, BIM models, and urban data platforms. However, these efforts remain largely fragmented:
- Technical fragmentation → Lack of interoperability between BIM (building scale) and CIM (city scale)
- Organisational fragmentation → Disconnected stakeholders and processes
- Semantic fragmentation → Inconsistent data models and standards
Despite significant investments, three core challenges persist:
- Limited interoperability between BIM and CIM environments
- Disconnected data ecosystems, where models, simulations, and real-time data are not integrated into shared decision-making environments
- Limited human-centric interfaces, making complex urban data difficult to understand, explore, and act upon for stakeholders, citizens, and decision-makers
At the same time, emerging paradigms such as Web 4.0, CitiVerse and human-centric virtual worlds are reshaping how cities are understood and managed.
Cities are no longer just modelling infrastructure — they are building interactive cognitive environments.
Key Questions for the Workshop
Participants will collaboratively explore:
- How can BIM and CIM environments be structurally connected into a coherent digital twin ecosystem?
- What are the minimum viable components of a CitiVerse Sandbox?
- How do we ensure interoperability through standards (data models, APIs, semantics)?
- How can these environments become human-centric, enabling understanding – not just visualisation?
- What is required to move from sandbox environments to real-world deployment and scaling?
Expected Outcome
By the end of the session, we aim to have:
- A clearer shared structure for:
- a Total BIM Sandbox
- a Total CIM Sandbox
- Identification of key components, standards, and interfaces
- A concrete step toward a Nordic interoperable CitiVerse framework
- Strengthened collaboration between academia, public sector, and industry
Participants
- Universities and research institutions
- Vocational education providers (Yrkeshögskolor)
- Public sector stakeholders
- Industry actors working with BIM, CIM, Digital Twins, and urban platforms
