Workshop/Build Meeting #2 – CitiVerse Sandbox BIM & CIM Thursday 26 March
This workshop is the second and continuing part of a broader Nordic (FinEstNorSwe) initiative to define and prototype a CitiVerse Sandbox — a shared environment where BIM and CIM can converge into a unified, scalable and interoperable system.
Agenda
13.00 Joint Introduction – FinEstNorSwe context and objectives
13:10 Introduction in Breakout Rooms
Zoom Group #1 – BIM Group. Focus: Building and structuring a Total BIM Sandbox for CitiVerse
Zoom Group #2 – CIM Group. Focus: Building and structuring a Total CIM Sandbox for CitiVerse
13:20 Workshop Session using the Miro Board
14:00 Group Reports
Each group presents outcomes and insights from the Miro work
14:20-15:00 Open Discussion
Next steps for developing:
– A Total BIM Sandbox
– A Total CIM Sandbox
This discussion will be framed within the CitiVerse / MetaVerse context
Context and Problem Framing
Across Europe, cities are rapidly developing digital twins, BIM models, and urban data platforms. However, these efforts remain largely fragmented — technically, organisationally, and semantically.
Despite significant investments, three core challenges persist:
- Lack of interoperability between BIM (building scale) and CIM (city scale) environments
- Disconnected data ecosystems, where models, simulations, and real-time data are not integrated into shared decision-making environments
- Limited human-centric interfaces, making complex urban data difficult to understand, explore, and act upon for stakeholders, citizens, and decision-makers
At the same time, the emergence of Web 4.0, CitiVerse and human-centric Virtual Worlds introduces a new paradigm: Cities are no longer just modelling infrastructure — they are building interactive cognitive environments for understanding and shaping complex urban systems.
This creates a critical need: How do we move from isolated digital models to interoperable, human-centric, and standards-based digital twin ecosystems?
Key Questions for the Workshop
Participants are invited to collaboratively explore:
- How can BIM and CIM environments be structurally connected into a coherent digital twin ecosystem?
- What are the minimum viable components of a CitiVerse Sandbox?
- How do we ensure interoperability through standards (data models, APIs, semantics)?
- How can these environments become human-centric, enabling understanding, not just visualisation?
- What is required to move from sandbox environments to real-world deployment and scaling across cities?
Expected Outcome
By the end of the session, we aim to have:
- A clearer shared structure for:
- a Total BIM Sandbox
- a Total CIM Sandbox
- Identified key components, standards, and interfaces
- A step toward a Nordic interoperable CitiVerse framework
